Window Blind Installation Guide
Window Recess

Step One - What is your window recess made from?

We supply all of our blinds with the most commonly required screws and plastic rawl plugs, but it’s essential to determine the type of material your window recess (the area around the window) is made from before starting in case you need something more specialist.

This guide should assist you in choosing the correct drill bits and rawl plugs for a secure fit.

Brick or Masonry

  • Characteristics: These are sturdy, load-bearing materials, often used in older buildings. Brick or masonry recesses can require special tools for drilling.
  • Rawl Plugs: Opt for plastic masonry plugs - these are what we supply as standard, in the correct size to suit our screws and brackets. These come in different sizes though (commonly 6mm or 8mm), so please ensure that the rawl plug corresponds to the size of the screws.
  • Drill Bits: Use a masonry drill bit designed to cut through hard materials. For extra hard bricks, you may need a hammer drill to make the process easier.

Plasterboard or Drywall

  • Characteristics: A common material for internal walls, plasterboard is relatively soft and easy to drill through but cannot hold heavy loads without additional support.
  • Rawl Plugs: Use hollow wall anchors or butterfly plugs that expand behind the drywall to provide additional grip.
  • Drill Bits: A standard wood or masonry drill bit can be used. Be cautious not to press too hard to avoid cracking the plaster.

Concrete

  • Characteristics: Concrete is a dense material, often used in modern constructions. Like brick, it requires durable tools for drilling.
  • Rawl Plugs: Use heavy-duty masonry plugs, designed to handle the dense material and provide a strong anchor.
  • Drill Bits: A masonry drill bit is necessary, and a hammer drill is highly recommended to penetrate the material more easily.

Wood

  • Characteristics: Timber window recesses are found in older homes or with wooden window frames. Wood is relatively easy to drill into.
  • Rawl Plugs: Often, no rawl plugs are needed for wood. You can screw directly into the wood with appropriate wood screws.
  • Drill Bits: A standard wood drill bit will suffice, and you should use wood screws for fixing the blind brackets into place.
